Fences is set in 1950s Pittsburgh and follows Troy Maxson, a former baseball player now working as a garbage collector. Struggling with the disappointment of dreams unfulfilled due to racial barriers, Troy’s bitterness starts to affect his relationships with his family. As he builds a fence around his home, he also builds emotional walls that keep out those he loves. This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by August Wilson delves into themes of family, love, responsibility, and the lasting impact of prejudice.

AUDITION INFORMATION

AUDITION TIMES

Auditions will take place on Saturday, January 18th, from 3:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. and Monday, January 20th, from 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Auditions will be first come, first served.

NOTE: MONDAY AUDITIONS WERE ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 19TH. WE HAVE RESCHEDULED THESE DUE TO THE INCLEMENT WEATHER.

AUDITION FORM

Before coming in for your audition, please fill out the below audition form. If you do not have a printer, the form will be available at auditions. Please include a headshot if you have one.

PERFORMANCE DATES

Performances will be March 28th to April 13th. Performances will take place from Friday to Sunday during this time. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 3:00 PM.

TECH REHEARSAL

Tech rehearsal will take place from March 22nd to 27th. Please note that tech rehearsal is mandatory for all actors.

AUDITION PREPARATION

NEED TO KNOW

Auditions will consist of reading the prepared sides (below). Please bring a current resume (if available) and a list of conflicts for the months of January-April. Please note that understudies will be considered.

CALLBACKS

Callbacks for Fences, if needed, will be on January 20th.

CONFLICTS

All actors should have their conflicts listed at time of auditions. There is space on the sheet for this.

CLEARENCES

Please note that, if cast, all cast members over the age of 18 will need to provide both Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Clearance. They can be obtained through the links on the below page.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

TROY MAXSON

The central character, Troy is a former baseball player and current garbage collector who prides himself on providing for his family. Troy is shaped by racism and has a hard time showing affection.

Male Presenting (40s-60s)

ROSE

Troy's wife and the source of love and nurturing in the family. 

Female Presenting (40s-60s)

CORY

Troy and Rose's son who is a talented football player. Cory embodies hope for the future, but his father's pessimism gets in the way.

Male Presenting (18-25)

LYONS

Troy's son from a previous relationship, Lyons is an ambitious jazz musician who struggles to make a living.

Male Presenting (20s-30s)

GABRIEL

Troy's brother who is delusional from a head injury in World War II. Gabriel is a wise fool who often sounds silly but knows more about the other characters than they know about themselves.

Troy's best friend and coworker who met him in prison.

RAYNELL

Troy and Alberta's daughter. Rose agrees to raise Raynell.
